February 2009
This week Lower Lakes has been a winter wonderland. The first snow blanketed everything. Then two days later we had a further heavier snowfall the like of which has never been seen at Lower Lakes before.
Several guests were able to enjoy the comforts of the Snug and the Lodges, with all the comforts of home in the midst of a beautiful snow-clad countryside. No ice on the lake, so plenty of opportunity to enjoy the views or venture out into the cold to fish

Week 5 - February 2009
This weekend we paid a visit to the various wildlife reserves on the Somerset Levels, a favourite with birdwatchers at this time of year with many winter visitors. English Nature, the Somerset Wildlife Trust, and the RSPB have gone to great trouble to make paths and hides into the heart of the wetlands so that a good day our is guaranteed to any birdwatchers staying at Lower Lakes.
For more information please visit our birdwatching page click here
Week 3 - January 2009
New Fishing Opportunities FREE to all our residents
We have now added 5 more lakes to the fishing that is available here at Lower Lakes. These lakes are also available to day ticketers and therefore not residents only. Lodge Lake and Iris Lake are for residents only.
For more information please go to our fishing pages click here
Week 2 - January 2009
The thaw has come, first a couple of wet and grey days, and then warm sunshine with the prospect of sunny days ahead. Long-tailed Tits have come to the bird table, and on Lodge Lake we see the return of the Great-Crested Grebe and one juvenile Mute Swan.
We have had some amazing sunrises, with the sun breaking through the morning mist painting Lower Lakes in beautiful pastel shades. The Snug is now practically completed and ready for guests.

Week 1 - January 2009
This first week in January has been cold and sunny, and the lakes have been frozen over for several days now. At the beginning of the week we had Mute Swans and Canada Geese on Lodge Lake, but now even the Mallards, Mandarins and our lame Tufty Duck have gone into hiding somewhere. Great Tits, Pied Wagtails and Robin are always outside the windows of Oak Lodge, glad for whatever we give them. Black-headed Gulls seem to be quite stable on the ice. The Herons and Cormorants search in vain for somewhere to fish.
Not so good for the fishermen, but for those who love nature every time of year has something to offer those who stay at Lower Lakes. Snug and cosy inside the lodges, outside the mornings are clear and frosty, and the evening sunsets over the Quantocks are glorious.
7th January – a “first” spotting for us at Lower Lakes – two Firecrests on the bund outside Oak Lodge. Residents also saw them during the day but didn’t know what these small birds were with their black and white eyes-stripes and yellow crown
